Kottayam
-
Kottayam is
equally well-known for its cultural
achievements. It is the Mecca of Kerala's
publishing scene, home to dozens of Malayalam
newspapers and magazines, including the state's
earliest, the Deepika (founded in 1887), as well
as the country's largest-selling daily and
weekly from the Malayala Manorama group. To
sustain this plethora of publications, Kottayam
became the first town in India to attain total
literacy, an event which triggered a mass
movement to make Kerala the country's first
totally literate state. Kottayam is also the
birthplace of a unique institution, the Sahitya
Pravarthaka Sahakarana Sangham (/saahithya
pRavaRthaka sahakaraNa sangham/) or the Writers
Co-operative Society, perhaps the first ever
co-operative of writers.
The
Valia Palli, dedicated to St. Mary, built
in 1550 for the Knanaya (/k~naanaaya/) Orthodox
Syrians, is situated in Thazhathangadi (/thAzhathangaadi/),
2 km from the centre of the town. It is famous
for its 8th c. Persian cross and the Pahalavi
inscription on the cross. Situated in the heart
of Kottayam town, the Thirunakkara Mahadevar (/thirunakkara
mahaadEvar/) Shiva Temple, built in the
indigenous style and featuring several murals,
attracts a large number of devotees for its
annual festival in the third week of March.

Trivandrum |
| Thiruvananthapuram,
earlier known as Trivandrum, is the capital city
of Kerala. The name literally splits into "Tiru","Anantha""puram"
meaning "the town of Lord ANANTHA".
This is really true since the temple is at the
heart of the town and for generations, the kings
have called themselves "Padmanabha-Dasa"
or the "servants of LORD Ananthapadmanabha",
and ruled the state as the representatives of
LORD Anantha-Padmanabha.The town has a history
of supporting fine art and culture. The Kings of
Tiruvancore (Thirunals as they are known) have
not only promoted art but have themselves been
accomplished artists. The most famous of them
are Swathi Tirunal who is a well known composer
in both Karnatak and Hindustani systems of
music, and Raja Ravi Varma the internationally
acclaimed painter, well known for inventing
paints using natural materials. |
